Bin Floor of Jill Windmill
Brighton-Hove

The Bin floor is the top floor of the rotating part of the mill, above the Stone and Spout floors. The sack hoist in the peak of the roof is used to raise the grain, through trap doors, a distance of 44 feet from the roundhouse.

The sack hoist is driven by a leather belt around the windshaft, which operates when the sweeps are turning by wind. The two hoppers can hold around one ton of grain. In commercial operation until 1906, Jill was milling around twenty tons of flour each week, when the wind was blowing.

Jill Windmill is a traditional working post mill located in the South Downs National Park in Sussex. She is maintained by volunteers and more info can be found on the website - http://www.jillwindmill.org.uk/
