海岸的岩石表面原就有一些深淺不ㄧ的凹穴，海水挾帶著石粒，進入凹穴，由於海水的旋轉帶動石粒，便和凹穴產生摩擦，不停的向下、向四周鑽挖。於是洞穴日漸擴大加深，便成為一個深井似的壺穴，通常裡面都會有石頭。
