Площадь зеркала Онежского озера составляет 9,7 тыс. км² (без островов), длина — 245 км, ширина — около 90 км. Северные берега скалистые, сильно изрезанные, южные — преимущественно низкие, нерасчленённые. В северной части глубоко впадают в материк многочисленные губы, вытянутые словно клещи рака.Средняя глубина озера составляет 31 м, максимальная глубина в наиболее глубоководной северной части озера достигает 127 м. Средняя глубина в центральной части составляет 50—60 м, ближе к югу дно поднимается до 20—30 м.В Онежское озеро впадают около 50 рек, не менее 110 притоков, большая часть которых небольшие речки и ручьи.

Moscow has been the capital of Russia for almost its entire history. The exception is during the period of the Russian Empire, which lasted from 1721 until the Russian Revolution 1917. For these two centuries the capital was St. Petersburg. The Russian Empire was the second largest contiguous Empire in world memory; only the Mongol Empire had been greater.
