The huge block of pudding-stone in Portofino Promontory forms the northernmost coastal Protected Area in the Western Mediterranean Sea which lies among fresh Apennine woods and the warm Mediterranean maquis, among chestnut tree woods and olive groves, farming and sea traditions. The Park was established in 1935. It houses one of the largest floristic concentrations in the Mediterranean area, a considerable variety of birds and invertebrates, important architectonic elements, and the best-known scenario in the world. The seabed preserves the whole range of the sea biocenosis of the upper Tyrrhenian Sea.
Parco di Portofino offers a global view of the Ligurian coast both from a naturalistic and a historical-anthropological point of view. The present aspect of the territory is the result of an original coevolution between nature and human activity which has led to the creation of a surprising variety of biological systems and habitats but also to a specific "material" culture (the confluence of sea, olive, and chestnut civilization).
A very thick network of paths crosses wild habitats, rural settlements, and sea villages rich in art and history and offers landscapes which have become part of the Mediterranean visual legend.
The Protected Area (1200 ha) is surrounded by a frame-area of about 3400 hectares. The Park territory reaches the Municipalities of Recco, Camogli, Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, Zoagli, and Chiavari.

Genoa

A city of art, the capital of Liguria in northern Italy and metropolis looking onto the sea, Genoa has grown up around the city's port - a natural cove that has always been the site of thriving traffic and commerce. Its ancient heart, Europe's biggest historic medieval center, is crisscrossed by a tight weave of alleys that capture the multicultural soul that has always characterized the city's history. Here, among workshops, eateries, and beautiful shops, glimmers a glimpse of the noble past of Genoa, "La Superba", consisting of sixteenth-century villas, Baroque votive aedicules, and prestigious churches giving onto small squares nestled between the buildings.

Modernity is a few steps away, in places returned to the people and tourists by restoration and great urban renewal projects conducted over the last decade. Genoa offers a dizzying mix of the old and the new.

The Expo with the Aquarium, Via San Lorenzo, the Palazzo Ducale, and the splendid Via Garibaldi full of museums. The city's charm can also be found in the numerous delegations from Nervi to Voltri - autonomous cities until the 20's - where visitors can explore villas surrounded by nineteenth-century parks, picturesque sea strolls, and museums large and small.
