Åbrott Stone Circle
Sweden

Åbrott stone circle can be found in western Sweden, in Västra Götaland County, about 100 km north of Gothenburg. This was called a judge's ring. People believed that stone circles were courts where judges sat on the stones. They are actually graves from the Iron Age, about 2000 years old. This one is 18 m in diameter with the unusual number of 22 stones plus one in the middle. It was partly excavated during repair work in 1940. In the centre, the grave contained the remains of a cremated man. Buried with him were a glass beaker, a whetstone, and a bone comb. Most graves of this kind have 7, 9, 11 or 13 stones, many have 9, seemingly an important number in prehistoric times.
