Barton's Dugway, San Juan County, Utah, USA
Utah

Barton's Dugway near Bluff, Utah, USA.  In 1883 William Hyde and Amasa Barton cut a wagon road down a solid rock cliff between Rincon and Bluff, Utah.  It was just wide enough to allow a wagon and team to travel on.  This image is taken in the middle of what's left of this road - called Barton's Dugway.

During wintertime Hide/Barton freighted goods between Santa Fe, New Mexico and Rincon on the San Juan River.  During summertime they freighted between Durango, Colorado and Rincon.  This road, on a sheer cliff, became necessary because the San Juan River changed course and blocked their usual travel route in the river bottom, and the only alternate route was San Juan Hill, which was too steep.

Today this road is all but forgotten and few know it exists.
