Cardón cactus at the Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Arizona USA
Arizona
The Cardón cactus (Pachycereus pringlei) is one of the most massive members of the cacti family. All 1200 species of cactus are native to the Americas. The Cardónes can measure over 70 feet in height and weigh over 25 tons. These plants grow very slowly and can live over 300 years. Cardónes are not saguaros. They are not even a related species. Cardónes grow in the Mexican states of Baja California and Baja California Sur. There are also a few stands of the cactus in the states of Sonora and Sinaloa. The Cardón can be found at sea level up to about 3200 feet in elevation from near El Rosario in the north, to the tropical Cape region at the southern tip of Baja California Sur. The main trunk of the Cardón may have as many as 25 vertical branches, up to 5 feet in diameter. These Cardónes are in the Desert Botanical Garden near Phoenix, Arizona.
