The 2010 Asian Games, also known as the XVI Asiad, was a multi-sport event in Guangzhou, China that began on 12 November and finished on 27 November 2010. Guangzhou was the second Chinese city to host the Games, after Beijing in 1990. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games were held on Haixinsha Citizen Square, which is located on Haixinsha Island in the Pearl River at the south of the Zhujiang New Town, the north of Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower and the east of Ersha Island, and was the first time in history that the opening ceremony for a major sports event was not held inside a stadium.
