Der Ort wurde schon in spätrömischer Zeit als Befestigung benutzt. Im 11. Jhdt. wurde auf den alten Fundamenten die Keschdeburg gebaut (Kastanien = Keschde, die überall in der Pfalz wachsenden Esskastanien, Maronen). Die Burg erlebte ab den Bauernkriegen 1525 ihren Niedergang und wurde in den Pfälzischen Erbfolgekriegen 1688 zerstört und blieb eine Ruine.
Im Mai 1832 versammelten sich 30.000 Bürger aus Deutschland, Frankreich und Polen zum Hambacher Fest. Diese Protestveranstaltung ist das Symbol der deutschen Revolution und dem Ruf nach Demokratie und Freiheit. Aber auch der Anfang einer gemeinsamen europäische Vision.
Heute wäre ein Hambacher Fest 2.0 mit globaler Vision sicher kein Fehler, vor dem Hintergrund realer und künftiger globaler Probleme.
In der Pfalz hat das Hambacher Schloß den Namen: „die Freiheit”.
