Horseshoe Springs, Skull Valley, Utah, USA
Utah

Horseshoe Springs is a small wetland and bird refuge maintained by the Bureau of Land Management in Skull Valley, Utah.  Two of the springs give rise to two waterways that then merge, giving the impression of a horseshoe when seen from above.  The scarcity of water in the desert meant that this location was an important stopping point for pioneers traveling to California, just as similar springs marked the stopping points for the Pony Express which crosses the desert some 60 miles to the south.  Wetlands in the desert always look striking, especially against the golden grass of the autumn.
