直到清初，台灣正式納入清朝版圖，紅毛城再度成為淡水河口防禦要塞，只是，清軍對它無過多經營。清末英法聯軍之役後，淡水開港，英國人租借紅毛城作為英國領事館使用，並在主堡東側興建領事官邸，紅毛城再度熱絡起來，成為和各國人士交流的地方。

二次大戰爆發，日軍向英、美宣戰，台灣當時為日本人所統治，英國領事館因而封閉，戰後英國人重返紅毛城，直至中英斷交。

爾後紅毛城又歷經許多波折，還曾經委託澳洲、美國代管，最終在 1980(民69) 年正式收歸中華民國所有。近四百年的台灣與世界交流史，就在紅毛城的見證下，如舞台劇幕一場場地上演著。
