Upper South Desert Overlook, Capitol Reef NP, Utah, USA
Utah

The Cathedral Valley loop drive makes a great day trip, especially when you know it hasn't rained or might rain any time soon.  The road is not paved and in sections crosses over bentonite clay deposits which become impassable when wet, even for the best 4WD.

Shortly before descending into Cathedral Valley to the north, we leave behind the South Desert, which the road follows on its route north.  Be sure to stop at the Lower South Desert overlook on the way up to see the crazy goblins in the rock.
