Although Gothic in overal, the San Salvador Cathedral, as we can see it today, is composed of elements built in different moments in time. It stands where the basilica built by Alfonso II was, and this one was also built on the remains of the church of his father Fruela, destroyed by the Arabs.
The basilica grew bigger and bigger swallowing up older buildings, including the King's palace, whose chappel, the Cámara Santa, now World Heritage, is the only section left and the oldest element we can see now in the Cathedral.
The Cámara Santa is home to the main treasures of the old Asturian kingdom: the two crosses (symbol of Asturias, the replica of one of them can be seen hanging from the roman bridge in Cangas de Onís)and some christians relics that made Oviedo an important pilgrimage city during the Middle Ages.
