Das auf der Museumsinsel gelegene "Deutsche Museum von Meisterwerken der Naturwissenschaft und Technik", gegründet von Oskar von Miller, wurde von 1906 bis 1925 erbaut. Die Insel wurde vorher als Floßanlegestelle und zur Lagerung von Holz und Kohle genutzt (daher auch der frühere Name "Kohleninsel").
