The original village is located within a wall. Medieval period: castle and urban fence; modern times: reinforcement of the medieval fence, remains of the São Cristóvão Fort and adaptation of the Atalaião; this one, of probable medieval foundation, presents the steep walls indicating an adaptation to a 17th century stronghold, dating from the War of Restoration. The urban fence has largely survived the city's transformations, presenting two doors, in situ, with some monumentality (Porta de Alegrete and Porta da Devesa). The castle, formed by three towers, designs a courtyard with an unusual configuration, as unusual is the fact that the Torre de Menagem is, at the same time, a tower of the urban fence, probably deriving from the irregularity of its plan.
