South Canyon is accessible by a long hike from the north rim but it is also an attractive campsite, albeit on the smaller size, to boaters and rafters. There are Indian ruins in the area, so many boaters stop here to view them, but may decide not to camp here. This photo shows a typical boaters camp of a self-guided rafting group. The large rafts are capable of carrying many hundreds of pounds. There are many conveniences that a rafting camp can bring with them that a backpacker cannot. You can notice the full size tables, the propane stove, the large kitchen box, and the numerous camp chairs. The large coolers full of food remain on the boats and campers "get groceries" from the coolers on the boats.
