民國八十年代，在一片環境保育聲浪中，反對開採珊瑚礁石灰岩生產水泥，直至民國86年，半屏山的採礦才正式停止。半屏山停止採礦後，政府要求水泥公司在東南側建滯洪池，以防止驟雨時，滯留半屏山所沖下來的雨水和土石。之後，成為人工溼地，由於半屏山的地理位置，可連結高雄市原有的援中港濕地、洲仔溼地、內惟埤濕地及中都濕地，串連成為高雄市區鳥類生態廊道的中繼站，並且成為高屏溪間短遷的據地。尤其藉著這個濕地，讓周邊動、植物一併復育，形成一個完整的生態區域，希望假以時日，讓生物漸漸適應環境，完成生態復育的理想。
