Les ruines de la chapelle Saint Thomas (léproserie médiévale d'Aizier)

La chapelle Saint-Thomas est construite par les moines de l’abbaye de Fécamp à la fin du XIIe siècle. Elle est dédiée à Thomas Becket, archevêque de Canterbury.

Cette léproserie médiévale accueille des malades de 1180 à 1550. Considérés comme impurs, les lépreux en font le centre de leur vie communautaire : ils avaient besoin d’un lieu de culte mais ne pouvaient plus entrer dans des lieux publics. Environ 250 personnes sont inhumées dans le cimetière de la chapelle.
Après le départ des derniers malades, en 1550, le site tombe en ruine. Un incendie accélère sa détérioration au XVe siècle. Enfin, le 25 juin 1717, l’évêque de Rouen, en visite, interdit qu’on y célèbre la messe.
En 1922, la chapelle fait l’objet d’une inscription à l’inventaire supplémentaire des monuments historiques.
