The Church of the Holy Cross was built in 1401 near a passage over the river Itz and at the trade route from Nuremberg to Leipzig. Travelling traders could pray here fore a safe journey through the dangerous Thuringian forest. A first stone bridge was built at this location in 1465. The current bridge was opened in 1956.
