Compass rose at the Tower of Hercules
Northern Spain

Hercules' tower is the oldest working lighthouse in the world. Contemportary to the famous Alexandría tower of Pharus island, it was restored in the 18th Century to acommodate the new technollogy of the times, and a new outskirt was added, but the inside is still of roman construction. Legend says that Hercules himself buried the remains of King Gerion here and erected a small tower with a fire on top which has been used since then by sailors looking for a safe harbour.
