Finke Desert Race 2011 -- Day 1
Australia

The Finke Desert Race is a 452km race from Alice Springs to Finke to the South and back again. Both cars/buggies and bikes race in a time trial fashion to Finke and back again. The actual race is held over 2 days. On day 1 the drivers/riders race from Alice Springs to Finke. On day 2 they return back to Alice Springs.

The "Finke", as it's commonly known, I a real test of endurance, especially for the motorbike riders, who pretty much do the whole race standing up! This photo shows the buggies/cars about 20kms South of Alice Springs on day 1. Please note that due to the way the image is made using a series of pictures the picture does not represent a single point in time, i.e. the cars here are not in the same order or distance apart as they were in reality. The image is only meant to capture the feel of the race.

I took 1000's of photos over the 2 days, so could have many panoramic photos to upload here, however each one takes several hours work so I can't do them all! Yet there are more to come. If you raced the Finke in 2011 send me an email with your race number and I'll see if I have any pictures of you. If you want a panorama made I can probably do that too.

More About Australia

There are no kangaroos in Austria. We're talking about Australia, the world's smallest continent. That being cleared up, let's dive right in! Australia is a sovereign state under the Commonwealth of Nations, which is in turn overseen by Queen Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen of Australia and Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth. The continent was first sighted and charted by the Dutch in 1606. Captain James Cook of Britain came along in the next century to claim it for Britain and name it "New South Wales." Shortly thereafter it was declared to be a penal colony full of nothing but criminals and convicts, giving it the crap reputation you may have heard at your last cocktail party. This rumor ignores 40,000 years of pre-European human history, especially the Aboriginal concept of Dreamtime, an interesting explanation of physical and spiritual reality. The two biggest cities in Australia are Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney is more for business, Melbourne for arts. But that's painting in very broad strokes. Take a whirl around the panoramas to see for yourself! Text by Steve Smith.
