Triton, Charonia tritonis, in the Ilot Maitre Marine Reserve New Caledonia
Nouméa
Triton Shells, AKA Trumpet Shells, are important predators of the Crown of Thorns Starfish and unfortunately have become extremely rare due to their exquisite beauty and the wacky human habit of killing beautiful things because of their beauty. This triton was safely protected by New Caledonia Law and the the fact it was on the coral reef within the Ilot Maitre Marine Reserve - where all forms of sea life are protected. New Caledonia has the largest coral reef lagoon in the world and it is a World Heritage Site because of it's amazing diversity of marine life. Freddy found this triton right out in the open on top of the reef during the day. Normally they prowl at night and hide under the coral during the day.
