Whangamata has an amazing amount of water activity options:

3 beaches, one with big surf, medium surf, and a super calm one in the harbour, a large tidal harbout, two rivers, 3 islands just ofshore accessible by kayak, a marina a peninsula, and a section where surf pounds cliffs making interesting rock formations.

It is one of New Zealand's most popular New Year's eve celebration spots.
