Ice and Fireweed
Alaska

North of Creamers Field in Fairbanks, AK, the ground is frozen as much as 100 meters deep. During the thousands of years that the ground has been frozen, ice wedges formed at the surface. From above, the intersecting ice wedges form irregular shapes referred to as ice wedge polygons, a type of patterned ground. The field made pink by fireweed was cleared for agriculture but soon abandoned allowing the fireweed to invade. Adjacent fields on slightly higher or drier ground are productive hay fields.

Stitched from 25 photos taken by a PowerShot S100 on a Saturn V Rig with SkyShield autoKAP controller all lofted by a Fled kite.
