沙湖生态旅游区以其独特优美的自然景观和得天独厚的旅游资源日益受到海内外人士的关注，胡锦涛、江泽民等国家领导人先后亲临沙湖，江泽民还亲笔为景区题写了“沙湖”二字。2007年，景区荣获国家首批5A级景区，并被中央文明办、建设部、国家旅游局确定为“全国文明风景旅游区示范点”、“全国旅游系统先进集体”，2010年，沙湖景区荣膺“中国十大魅力休闲旅游湖泊”称号，“塞上江南”的美称，在沙湖可谓体现得淋漓尽致。
