Winnemucca Sand Dunes (aerial)
Nevada

A 400' aerial view overlooking the Winnemucca Sand Dunes north of Winnemucca, Nevada.  This is the eastern fringe of the 40 mile stretch of dunes, to which the main dune fields (the largest in the state) are not in this view.  Here you can see how these small dunes have migrated east from the wind, leaving behind trails on the landscape, all originating formerly as the lake bottom of prehistoric Lake Lahontan.  Their trails can be traced over the hills in the background.
