1642年にオランダ人によって建造された熱蘭遮城（ゼーランジャ城、現在の安平古堡）の城下町が形成され、台湾初の町となる延平街が誕生した。オランダ人が城の東側に都市を築き熱蘭遮城街を整えると、南北に渡る熱蘭遮城街から東西に小道が格子状に延びる現在の延平街、効忠街、中興街という３本の街道が形成された。これが台湾近代における初めての都市型城下町となった。土産物屋が並ぶ延平街
