Holy Week (Semana Santa) is the biggest festival of the year in Antigua, Guatemala. The events culminate in Good Friday (Viernes Santo) when families and communities work together for hours and hours to make sawdust carpets (alfombras) like the one pictured above. However, the life of these carpets is short-lived; once the procession walks over, it is destroyed forever.
