Здание Госбанка строилось в 1913 - 1917 гг. в стиле неоклассицизм по проекту петербургского академика архитектуры Марьяна Марьяновича Перетятковича, разработанному в 1910 г. Этот известный русский архитектор и инженер окончил институт гражданских инженеров и Академию художественных искусств в Петербурге.
В 1917 г. петербургский архитектор Л.А.Дитрих и скульптор Я.З.Вайде создали композицию со львами и лестницей, который символизировал парадный вход в здание Госбанка. Изначально его фасад был спроектирован с выходом на Б. Садовую. Однако имевшегося там места для постройки было недостаточно. За снос соседних зданий городская Дума запросила с банка непомерную сумму, и банкиры решили развернуть здание фасадом на Средний проспект.

Moscow has been the capital of Russia for almost its entire history. The exception is during the period of the Russian Empire, which lasted from 1721 until the Russian Revolution 1917. For these two centuries the capital was St. Petersburg. The Russian Empire was the second largest contiguous Empire in world memory; only the Mongol Empire had been greater.

After the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia became a federal republic of 83 states.
