Braga, Santiago square
Portugal

Largo de Santiago is located in the very center of the old Roman city of Braga, close to the old Roman Forum. The medieval wall also passed through here, in which we can see one of its towers, the Torre de Santiago next to the Porta de Santiago, the old entrance to the city for those who came from Porto and pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela. Next to the door is the Santiago Seminary that was once the Colégio de S.Paulo da Companhia de Jesus. This college was built in 1567 by Archbishop D. Bartolomeu dos Márties - an intervener in the Council of Trent, and beatified by John Paul II.

With the expulsion of the Jesuits by the Marquis of Pombal in 1759, the building was occupied by the Ursuline nuns, and in 1884, it was ceded to the Archdiocese for the installation of the S. Pedro Seminary. With the implantation of the Republic, it was transformed into a barracks of the Infantry Regiment 29 for some decades. It was returned to the Church and serves as a Seminary. Its 16th century portal came from the old seminary of S. Pedro
