Český Těšín - Masaryk Park (Masarykovy sady)

Masaryk Park (Masarykovy sady) was established in 1813 by Duke Albert (or Albrecht) Casimir and originally was named Duke Albrecht Avenue.

After the emergence of the independent Czechoslovakian state it was renamed as the Masaryk Park or Masaryk Avenue (in honour of Tomáš Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia). Then, after the seizure of the city by the Polish army in 1938, it was called President Mościcki Avenue, and during the Nazi occupation (1939-1945) it was named Schiller Park. In the communist era the park bore its name in honour of the Russian writer Maxim Gorky. Since 1989 it has been renamed Masaryk Park (Masarykovy sady) again.

In 2010 the park was revitalized in the framework of a joint project of two border cities - Český Těšín and Cieszyn.

The landmarks of the park and surrounding area are: the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, a chapel from 1897, the monument to T. Masaryk, which commemorates his visit in this region in 1930, the nonument to the victims of the First World War, and interesting buildings from the 19th and the early 20th century (including the oldest house in the area ofČesky Těšín from 1833 and the school buildings from the 1920s) etc.
