ゆっくりとした時間が流れるレトロな空間

 江戸時代、風待ちや潮待ちの港町として栄えた御手洗は、平成6年重要伝統的建造物群保存地区として国から選定されました。
 土地が狭いため数度にわたって埋め立てられた御手洗は、大小の商家、茶屋、船宿、住宅、神社、寺院などが混在し、集落中心路、集落連絡路、集落生活路(小路)等が網の目のように巡っています。また大波止、石橋、高燈籠、石垣護岸、雁木等、港町の生活上必要な土木的建造物が当時のまま現存しているものもあります。
 御手洗地区は17世紀の中頃形成されて以来、江戸時代の約200年間を経て昭和初期に至るまで、瀬戸内海交通の中継港として、時代時代に応じた発展を示し、その痕跡を今も集落内に留めています。
 また、ここでは、地元の観光ガイドが、歴史や文化について分かりやすく案内をしてくれます。

The eight islands of Japan sprang into existence through Divine Intervention.The first two gods who came into existence were Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto, the Exalted Male and Exalted Female. It was their job to make the land for people to live on.They went to the bridge between heaven and earth and, using a jewel-encrusted halberd, Izanagi and Izanami churned up the sea into a frothy foam. As salty drips of water fell from the tip of the halberd the first island was formed. Its name was Onogoro.So far, so good. But when Izanagi and Izanami first met on their island, Izanami spoke to Isanagi without being spoken to first. Since she was the female, and this was improper, their first union created badly-formed offspring who were sent off into the sea in boats.The next time they met, Izanagi was sure to speak first, ensuring the proper rules were followed, and this time they produced eight children, which became the islands of Japan.I'm sure you did not fail to miss the significance of this myth for the establishment of Japanese formal society.At present, Japan is the financial capital of Asia.
