Clyne Japanese Bridge
Wales

Clyne Gardens, Swansea. The gardens have been made from part of the original gardens and woods of Clyne Castle, the home of millionaire industrialist William Graham Vivian. He purchased the castle and land in 1860, spending much time and money on developing it to suit his tastes and style. It stayed in the Vivian family until the death of Algernon (The Admiral) in 1952. As a result of death duties the castle was sold and passed to Swansea University. The gardens contain many rare and unusual plants collected from all over the world. The gardens cover some 19 hectares and include over 2,000 different plants including over 800 rhododendrons for which the gardens are famous. Here you see the Japanese Bridge, it was built then painted red by the Admiral. The water comes from a stream off Clyne Common to the Japanese Pond, then flows down and under the Japanese Bridge through the Gardens to join the sea at Blackpill. Alongside the Bridge grows a Handkerchief Tree 'Davidia Involucrata var. vilmoriniana' (also known as the Dove Tree or Ghost Tree originally introduced to Europe from China).
