Convent of Christ, Cloister of the Hostelery, Tomar
Portugal

The Cloister of the Hostelery, was built in 1541-42, the contiguous spaces was where pilgrims and visitors of the Convent were received, On the upper floor the Nobles were housed and the Clergy was constituted by a classic colonnade balcony. On the ground floor were the servants' quarters and stables. At the south east top, a cistern collects rainwater, and feeds the cascade of the fountain in the Cloister of D. João III. Its development on two floors of four equal stretches (29m each), with an additional floor on the north side, reflects the need for balance in terms of balance.
