Old digesters on Macquarie Island. Today, Macquarie Island is a World Heritage nature reserve with millions of penguins and hundreds of thousand elephant seals. However, not too long ago the island was a hub for the seal trade. These digesters were once used to extract oil from seals and penguins. Now they stand as a grim reminder of man's ability to destroy the world around us.
