Fortuny Theater was founded in 1882 driven by the core leader of the bourgeoisie Reus and motivated by the need to give Reus a theater comparable to the first Catalan towns.

The Fortuny opened its doors on 16 November 1882 with Gounod's opera Faust. The theater was built according to the tastes of the time abarrocats under the direction of architect Francesc Blanc and the decorator Josep M. Puig, and achieved an obvious role social, cultural and citizens with a wide echo and called national; his name and reputation of elegance of its structure were known everywhere,

Since opening in 1983 the theater lived through the vicissitudes of the different entrepreneurs manage. For his marching scenarios are all kinds of shows, from the most popular to the most important companies of the time, through the introduction of cinema, the acquisition of the building by the Society's Circle, 1919 .

Over the years the infrastructure of the theater was degrading until 1981 constituted the Fortuny Theater Consortium formed by the Generalitat of Catalonia of Tarragona and Reus City Council, which carries out restoration, renovation and operation of the theater through an agreement with the Society's Circle. The Fortuny opened its doors again on 15 November 1988 under the direction and management of Josep M. Fargas, with a concert by soprano Montserrat Caballé, coordinated by Reus Lluís Pascual, Theater Director.

Those in charge of the reform were the architects Carles Espinós Affairs, Antonio Serra and Lluís Piñol, who kept the style of the nineteenth century, preserving the structure of the theater today are also introducing new decorative elements like the great lampstand the stalls, allegory the sun.
