Gokkale Silifke Vr Mersin 0e4
Turkey
Gökkale is a two-storey villa rustica located about 1.5 – 2 km to the northwest of İmamlı Neighborhood. This type of residence is defined as “villa rustica with a separate lord’s mansion of its own”. In such residences, while the agricultural structures are built in a large area, a big and fancy-looking house belonging to the lord is positioned separately in the center. The court of the main building, the mansion of the lord owning the whole farm, is paved with stone tiles, and the court has several cisterns under it. There are more cisterns on the outskirts of the hill and below, and we see a mausoleum to the west of this main structure. The mansion is surrounded by two khamasorion-type sarcophagi, one from the Late Roman Period and the other from the Early Byzantine Period, olive oil presses and a water mill. There is also an ancient 1-m-wide, stone paved road of about 2 km starting from the mansion. We can see remains from antiquity along the road that crosses farmlands. This road also connects the ancient roads between Seleuceia and Olba.
