At the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers, the Green river does appear slightly green compared to the red-brown of the Colorado.  Over seven hundred miles from its headwaters in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming the Green carries its load of sediment into the Colorado above Cataract Canyon inside Canyonlands National Park.  From the Needles section of the park, hikers can access an overlook by a 5 mile  (10 miles round trip) hike between sandstone spires, over slick rock, and through open desert.  On a cliff nearly 2,000 feet above the level of the rivers, the overlook provides a grand view of the river carved canyons.
