Gulek Fortress Tarsus Vr Mersin 134
Turkey
To reach the inscription, we need to set off from Çukurbağ Neighborhood of Tarsus District, Mersin, drive pass Sarışıh Caravanserai, continue on the highway until the tollbooths and turn to Tekir (Akçatekir) road. Later on, we need to turn to the old road positioned parallelly to the highway on the right. The inscription is at the end of this road, on the western outskirts of the rock mass. The Latin Inscription reads “ the Emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus loyal, merry, invincible Augustus (Caracalla) got this road made boring the mountains”. Other two lines below in Greek indicates the border line of Cilicia with the statement “the Cilician Border”. The inscription, generally known by people as “Alexander Inscription”, actually belongs to the Emperor Caracalla.
