La Iglesia de Santa Bárbara es tal vez la más importante de Mompox, donde se da inicio a la famosa Semana Santa. Se construyó en 1613 y es una iglesia bastante particular. Tiene una torre con un balcón y tres ventanas, que recuerdan la historia de esta santa católica. Bárbara era una bella muchacha, hija de un padre supersticioso y pagano, acostumbrado a adorar dioses inexistentes en la antigua Turquía. Como Bárbara era bella, su padre decidió encerrarla en una torre, con dos ventanas. La chica construyó una tercera ventana, para hacer honor a la Trinidad y mandó a dibujar en el baño una cruz, pues su tendencia era hacia el catolicismo. Esto, por supuesto que hizo enojo en su padre, quien la delató ante un juez, que sentenció su muerte por decapitación. Pues resulta que el padre de la bella Bárbara fue quien quiso ejecutar la sentencia. La llevó a un monte arrastrándola y efectivamente la decapitó. Al bajar de la montaña de perpetrar el horrendo crimen, un rayo lo partió como castigo celestial. Por eso la gente le reza a Santa Bárbara cuando caen rayos.
