The Institute of Protein Research was founded June 9, 1967, in accordance with the Decree of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences to perform basic research on problems of proteins.
The research staff of the Institute is 65 scientists; the total staff is 220. The Institute includes four research laboratories (Laboratory of Mechanisms of Protein Biosynthesis, Laboratory for Structural Studies of the Translation Apparatus, Laboratory of Viral RNA Biochemistry, and Laboratory of Protein Biophysics) and eleven research groups (Group of Protein Engineering, Group of Protein Biosynthesis Regulation, Group of Molecular Genetics, Group of Genetic Engineering, Group of Nucleoprotein Physics, Cell Biology Group, Group of Supramolecular Protein Structures, Group of Protein Thermodynamics, Group for Structural Studies of Ribosomal Proteins, Protein Structure Modeling Group and Group of Peptide Chemistry). The main trends of research are studies of molecular mechanisms of protein biosynthesis and analyses of the structure of proteins in light of their biological functions.

Наукоград Пущино расположен на правом берегу р. Ока на южной границе Московской области. В городе располагается 9 научно-исследовательских институтов естественнонаучного профиля и радиоастрономическая обсерватория. Население города составляет 20 тысяч человек (по данным за 2006 год).
