Katyn Memorial. The ten-meter orthodox cross
Russia

Katyn Memorial is situated 20 km awayfrom the center of Smolensk between villages Gnezdovo and Katyn, inso called Katyn Forest – in the place of awful events of the20s-40s of the twentieth century, victims of which were the citizensof two countries: the Soviet Union and Poland. Katyn Forest hasbecome the symbol of the suffering and doom of peoples in front ofatrocious power of totalitarianism.

On 28 July 2000 the opening of KatynNational Memorial Complex - the first in Russia internationalmonument in honour of the victims of the political arbitrariness ofthe Stalin government- took place. The sponsors of the constructionwere the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and theCouncil of Preserving Memory, Struggle and Martyrdom of Poland

----

The ten-meter orthodox cross (thesymbol of eternal memory and atonement) opens the Russian part of thememorial. Each of the 9 graves is framed with a hedge of an irregularshape, which shows that exact numbers of the buried aren’t known. As the Russian area hasn’t been researched entirely, there arebridges erected in order not to disturb the dead. Out of the limit ofthe memorial in the Valley of Death there are 200 odd not caredburials of the Soviet citizens. In 2009 a monument was erected by ourcountrymen there.
