In the old Rossio of the city or Campo D. Luís I, the city's markets and fairs were held. The characters Padre Amaro and Cónego Dias from “O Crime do Padre Amaro” by Eça de Queiroz, used to stroll in Rossio. It is currently occupied by the Fonte Luminosa, which displays a bronze statue representing the River Lis and the River Lena, by the sculptor Lagoa Henriques, opened in 1978. It is located in the place where, between 1880 and 1958, the Teatro D. Maria existed. Pia, an important cultural center of the city. Miguel Torga, an enthusiastic film buff, attended this theater, not only to watch films, but also to musical and theatrical performances.
