Swift Creek erratic [2]
California

This large granite glacial erratic is located about three miles up the Swift Creek Road near Trinity Center, California.  The site is now heavily wooded but actually sits on a lateral moraine on the north side of Swift Creek.  A glacier from the Ice Age originated from the Red Trinities & terminated down by present-day Trinity Center.  This boulder likely originated from the Gibson Peak area about 7-8 miles away (the only granite mountain in the Red Trinities) & was transported down by ice & deposited here.  Such glacial bedrock sculpting such as roche moutonnées w/ striations are prominent especially above Granite Lake.  The entire drive on this road is nothing but red peridotite geology, making this boulder an obvious giveaway to its glacial origin (as well as its massive size & unusual location).
