Impaktkrater

This is the center of the origin of Noerdlinger Ries. Scientists point out that the Ries was created by the impact of an asteroid, also referred to as a “meteorite” although this is not strictly correct.

About 14.5 million years ago an asteroid, about 1 kilometre in size, accompanied by a 150 m sized satellite, races towards the Earth. Both crash at a speed of more than 70,000 km/h into the Alb and create two craters with diameters of 25 and 4 km, respectively: The “Nördlinger Ries” and the “Steinheim Basin”.

More About Bavaria

The “Free State of Bavaria” is renowned for being culturally unique and for the emphasis which it places on preserving its heritage and traditions. It is also extraordinarily beautiful, boasting a plethora of castles, palaces, cathedrals, abbeys and monasteries not to mention spectacular scenery. Bavaria is more than Alps, men in “lederhosen” (leather pants), women in “dirndl” (traditional dresses) and frothy glasses of beer by the “maβ” (liter).
