The most famous and iconic place in Russia and in Moscow, the witness of major historical and present-day events, the main arena of grand celebrations in Moscow, the Red square is rightfully called the heart of the capital. The history and power of the entire state is imprinted in her appearance.
The history of the square goes back several centuries. It originated in the reign of Ivan III, namely at the end of the XV century. The special status it received in the years of the Soviet Union. After the first victory parade has been a tradition to have it every year in this place.
The smooth stone pavement squares, the majestic Kremlin wall, clean lines of the Mausoleum attracts tourists into the heart of the capital every day. High in the sky the birds fly up from the towers and Nikolai Spassky gate. Over the walls of the Kremlin the dome of the government building rises.

In Russian the word red sounds like krasnyi that in the olden days meant beautiful.

Overview and HistoryMoscow takes its name from the Moskva river, where Slavic settlements began around 500AD. They adopted Christianity from the Byzantine Empire in 988 A.D., and it would last as the national religion for a thousand years.By the 15th cent. Moscow had become the capitol of the Russian state under the Grand Duchy of Moscow, which had been busily assimilating smaller feudal territories while battling the Golden Horde of Mongols. His son Ivan IV, or "Ivan the Terrible", become the first crowned Tsar of Russia.The succession of Tsars lasted from Ivan IV until Peter the Great, who proclaimed the Russian Empire in 1721, with St. Petersburg for its capitol.The Russian Empire survived the "Times of Troubles" which saw chaos, invasion and several uprisings of the people. Napolean Bonaparte came within 25 miles of capturing Moscow during his disastrous invasion of 1812, but was turned back after thousands of his starving troops were ambushed and killed by peasant guerilla fighters.By the beginning of the 20th Century, Moscow was capitol, this time of the largest country in the world.The Industrial Revolution came later to Russia than to Western Europe, partly due to Russia's institute of serfdom which kept peasants bound to the land.
