The iconic pyramid-shaped Cathedral Metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro is a unique looking church, to say the least. Despite the large stained glass windows, the interior has an unmistakable darkness to it. The enormity of the empty space makes the human element seem small and insignificant. Missing are the typical paintings that personify Jesus and the saints. The building is impressive, but the modern design feels a little odd.
