На этом месте когда-то стоял памятник Екатерине II, который был снят с пьедестала в 1917 г. и переплавлен на заводе "Красный Аксай". Пьедестал был немного доработан, и 28 июня 1925 г. на нем установили скульптуру Карла Маркса. Она была разрушена в годы Великой Отечественной войны. Новый памятник не этом месте был открыт в 1959 г. На месте собора св. Георгия Просветителя в 1979 г. был построен дворец культуры завода "Красный Аксай".
