1563 wurde der "Pestfriedhof" vor den damaligen Toren der Stadt gegründet. Heute wird der Friedhof von der Thalkirchener- und Pestalozzistraße umschlossen.

Der Ort ist heute ein öffentlicher Park und dient vielen Spaziergängern zur Entspannung und Besinnung.

Viele Prominente fanden hier ihre letzte Ruhestätte, u.a. der Optiker Josef von Fraunhofer, die Baumeister Friedrich von Gärtner und Leon von Klenze, der Chemiker Justus von Liebig und der Physiker Georg Simon Ohm.
