Das Siegestor bildet den nördlichen Abschluss der Ludwigsstraße, die zusammen mit der Feldherrnhalle die Begrenzung der königlichen Prachtstraße bildet. Nach Süden hin eröffnet der Triumphbogen die belebte Leopoldstraße, die Haupt- Flaniermeile des Szeneviertels Schwabing. Auf dem Siegestor sieht man stadtauswärtsblickend eine Bronzeskulptur der Bavaria mit vier Löwen.

Der Triumphbogen, um 1840 von Ludwig I. bei dem Architekten Friedrich von Gärtner in Auftrag gegeben, sollte nach dem Vorbild des Konstantinsbogens in Rom gestaltet werden. An der Nordseite des Tores soll der Widmungsspruch "Dem bayerischen Heere" an das siegreiche Ende der Befreiungskriege von 1815 erinnern. Die Südseite ziert seit der Beendigung des Zweiten Weltkrieges der Schriftzug "Dem Krieg geweiht, im Krieg zerstört, zum Frieden mahnend".
